I can’t even figure out how to take off the stupid ball on it.

It either screws on or pops out. Spin the ball either way. If it doesn’t spin or you have substantial trouble spinning it, take a pair of pliers and insert them in the ring, and pull the tips apart, pulling the ring just a little away from the ball, and it should pop out. Continue gently easing it open until you can insert the ball and take it out easily.
